If you notice yourself making the same resolutions year after year...make this the year you STOP & do things a bit differently. We all know the saying "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over again but expecting different results". New Year’s resolutions are no exception.
For entrepreneurs & small business owners...making this change is even more critical, as you are already carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Instead of making such broad & lofty resolutions, set more specific, smaller goals that will help you achieve your ultimate larger ones.
Here are some of the most popular resolutions & suggested changes to make each more achievable:
Lose weight...instead, add one day to your current workout routine; change up your current routine by trying something new; make your 1st weight loss goal 10% of your ultimate goal; cut carbs; cut sugar; keep a food journal; increase resistance training.
Exercise...instead, set your goal to workout 2-3 days per week if you are not currently exercising; get a fitness watch or app & set a goal for a minimum average number of steps per day (some days may be higher, some lower...so long as you are hitting the average); skip the elevator & take the stairs; work with a personal trainer.
Join a gym...see #2 ( who cares if you work out in a gym, outside, at home etc...so long as you are getting it in!)
Quit smoking or drinking...these are probably two of the hardest. Focus on the steps to achieve them...try hypnosis, the patch, limit drinking to weekends or social functions, set limits, etc.
Get out of debt...instead, start a budget; pay the max you can afford on one debt with highest interest rate or lowest balance (if none have interest); stop using credit cards unless you can pay balance in full when due; limit yourself to one credit card; cut specific expenses.
Get more sleep...instead set a minimum average number of hours to achieve per night (& don’t start @ 8 hours, if you are now only getting 5!); set a bedtime...it doesn’t just work for the little ones (smile)
Stop cursing...well, if you have any of the others on your list, let this one go! With the stresses & pressures of running a business & just life...who cares! (wink)
New Year’s is the time for a fresh start...so don’t start your year with the added pressure of goals you cannot achieve or do not have specific plans as to how to get there. Set yourself up for success! Celebrate every victory & continue setting new goals once you achieve each until you get to the finish line!
Happy New Year! Have a safe, happy, healthy and wealthy 2019!!!
